October Updates from R.E. Carr

It’s that time of year – Halloween, Pumpkin Spice Lattes, and a new release from R.E. Carr!  I am happy to announce that the fourth installment of the Rules Undying Series – Point One Five – will be available in Kindle and paperback version on October 31st, 2017.

But wait there’s more . . .

If you haven’t checked it out yet the second part of my Agents series of shorts is available in Autumn Equinox and it’s absolutely free on Amazon.

Last, but not least, I am happy to announce that Six (Rules Undying book 2) is the winner of the 2017 RONE award for best Paranormal.  I can’t thank the staff of InD’tale Magazine enough for this honor!

But for now, I am hard at work finishing the last two books of my six-part “trilogy.” (Yes, I can hear the groans already, but I guess I just love writing in this series!)  I’ve already finished the first draft of Zero and am excited to announce that the final installment of the Rules Undying Universe – One – is in pre-production.  That’s just writer speak for I’m scribbling it out furiously on notebook paper before I forget anything!

September Updates from R. E. Carr

Hello, all my fantastic Four fans.  I can’t believe that summer is already winding down and we are about to enter the time of hoodies, Halloween, pumpkin spice everything.  I thought I would give you a quick roundup of everything that was keeping me so quiet recently.

I am happy to announce that the latest installment in the Rules Undying series, Point One Five, is currently being edited.  I hope to have this surprise book baby available this October!  I figured it was only fair that Gail Filipovic finally gets to tell her side of the story before it all comes to an exciting conclusion.

Speaking of conclusions, I can also announce that I’m almost halfway through drafting Zero, the last in the Rules Undying series.  I promise to keep you all updated as I get closer to finishing.

Since I am so excited about Rules Undying this month, I can also announce that both Four and Six are available until September 30th at a special price of 99 cents!  Who knows, maybe there will be more special promotions as we close in on the launch of Point One Five.

Finally, I haven’t forgotten about The Download universe.  If you haven’t already checked out the special prequel short, The Jumper, it is currently available for free in the Kindle Press author anthology Summer Solstice.  Its sequel, The Tutorial, will be available soon, and I’ll be sure to keep you posted!

June Updates

Well howdy fantastic Four fans.  I know it’s been a while so I thought I would peek out of my hole and let you all know what’s been going on.  I’m hard at work at the latest installment of the Rules Undying series, Point One Five; otherwise known as “what ever happened to Gail Filipovic?”

First off, I have to share that if you love food and Rules Undying, four of my recipes are featured in the anthology KP Authors Cook their books which you can read for free on Amazon here.

In other Kindle Press author news, fellow KP author Jeff Haskell has his latest, Arsenal, up for preorder for only 99 cents.  It’s got a kick-ass girl in armor, so I’m really looking forward to this one and I hope you check it out while it’s on early sale.

But wait… there is more!  If you prefer my Sci-Fi, I am pleased to announce that a mini prequel to The Download will be available for free in the Summer Solstice anthology coming out later this month.  I will send out a link as soon as that is available.

Oh yeah, and finally those plucky werewolves in Six are up for the In’DTale magazine 2017 Rhone awards in the paranormal long category.  I still can’t believe it but you can read the wonderful review here.

It’s about that time…

I know it’s been quiet in R. E. Carr land, but that is because it is almost time to release a fresh round of havoc upon the world.  I am happy to announce that The Download will be available on Amazon on Tuesday, May 9th.

What is The Download?  Well, it’s not the Matrix, but telling you too much more would be a spoiler.  I can, however, share what some of the advanced readers said:

“While a marked departure from her usual genre, this book still holds the well-developed characters, sassy dialogue and expansive world that makes R.E. Carr's work such a delight to read.”

“The book starts off with a bang and zooms along at a rollercoaster pace.”

“What I thought was the standard story was the rollercoaster reaching the top of the first hill, and then I slammed through breakneck twists and turns over and over. The plot twists were unique, except for the one I thought I had guessed.... until I found out that no, that was a red herring.”

I hope you will try it out for yourself and explore a world over fifteen years in the making.  Oh, and as for the Rules Undying universe?  Never fear, I am currently working on Point One Five a.k.a. “Whatever Happened to Gail Filipovic?

More to come soon!

A Very Special Message from R. E. Carr…

Today I have a very important announcement to share.  I can no longer hide the truth within my heart.  I cannot find inspiration from vampires anymore, and since I was banned for life at the local goat ranch due to one fainting incident…. I present to you my exciting new release:

Just when you thought you'd seen enough Amish revenge thrillers… one more enters the fray:

For one long, lonely year Jedidiah Smuckers has walked the land, mourning the loss of his one true love – Destiny Lovegood.  However, his life turns on a water wheel as he learns that Destiny wasn't mauled in a tragic water-skiing misadventure, but rather abducted by the local slumlord's second cousin – Lord Malcolm Tent.

How can Jedidiah live knowing that Destiny is just beyond his reach?  How can he resist the temptation of Betsy Biglesbottom, the local calving expert that ran off to get her degree in nuclear physics despite the objections of the elders?  But, most of all how can he live knowing that his own brother's life depends on their community winning the county building jamboree.
There is only one thing he can do, one true test left of his resolve.  He must conquer his greatest fear and take up the hammer again…

Raising the Barn!

I'm sure you guys can't wait to see this latest release from Smeadly Smut Press.  Coming June 31st, 2017!

Read the book that the critics call "mind-blowingly brainless" and "completely without redeeming qualities."   J.K. Rowling's second cousin twice removed even said: "if I never read anything else, it's because R. E. Carr so thoroughly ruined the English language."
Look for Raising the Barn sold everywhere, just like Table Talk pies…

But since I love you all.  Here is a slight tease from Raising the Barn.

Betsy looked up at him, up at his bulging biceps as he forced the square peg into the round hole on the joist.  She marveled at the way the late August wind swept through his beard, the way it teased and taunted each strand until it tufted into a mighty mane.  "Why it's like Don King sat upon his face and ate cotton candy," she thought. "I am going to marry this man one day."

Sadly, Betsy's formal education had not cured her of her tragic affliction – her utter lack of inner
monologue.

"Betsy, you may be as fine as gold horseshoes, and sweet as cream straight from a Jersey's teat, but I can never think of you that way so long as there is even a chance that my Destiny awaits," Jedidiah sighed as he looked up from his work. "For as long as there is breath in my body and NCIS on TV, my heart shall remain forever true."
It was at that moment that the spaceship landed…

Find out more in Raising the Barn, and stay tuned for an extra special treat, a preview of She Would Push My Buttons if I Could Only Wear Them… the final installment of the Jedidiah Smuckers Saga… for now!

Oh and R. E. Carr might also be working on something for the Rules Undying series this year, and having her sci-fi epic The Download on preorder Monday (we hope!), but who cares about that in the midst of so many fantastic (barn) erections?

Beware the Ides of March...

It’s that time of the month again, when I peek out of my writing cave, look around and post something before I dart back inside.  Since I am currently knee-deep wading through the final edits of The Download (coming soon from Kindle Press), and trying to get some traction on Zero, I thought I would take a moment to recognize some of the wonderful authors who run around the indie scene.

Please note that now is the time of year where I look for mindless, popcorn-and-wine entertainment, so I thought I’d hop on the Tears of Crimson Paranormal Blast and share some fun with you.  We’ve got angels, demons, vampires and a few dozen shirtless shifters!  Please enjoy and take the time to check them out.

London Beckley (aka Lindy Beck):

“Human life is short. A flicker of time, and then it’s over. Live it while you can... With me.”

Those were the outrageous words Zane said to me the night I attended the adult convention to try to network and sell some books.

I had left my husband to pursue my life on my own terms rather than put up with one more word of insult. Once I arrived at the event, I was startled to find someone already at my table, Zane, claiming to be my assistant for the night. As the event progressed, amidst his antics of reading excerpts to chittering ladies, and flashing what I thought were fake fangs, he made his intentions towards me crystal clear.

And Now for Something Completely Different (for real this time...)

I suppose it had to happen at some point.  I wrote something without a single vampire in it, though I must confess to a rather unusual half-Neanderthal who turns into a scimitar cat from time to time.  I've been distracted (and not writing blog posts) so that I can bring you The Download, my first science fiction epic.  I say epic because at one point I got up to 260,000 words in this beast, but you'll all be relieved to hear that I've trimmed it down quite a bit.

If you like aliens, archaeology, and a protagonist who just happens to be a Gen-X slacker tasked with saving the world, then I think The Download will pique your interest.  Here is a little tease of the cover.

I'll have more information on the release soon, while my good friends at Kindle Press iron out the details.

Oh, and never fear, Georgia, Ren, Steve, and Mr. Lambley still need to work with Paige and her pack to figure out what the heck is going on in the Rules Undying Universe. So look for Zero, the fourth and (probably) final installment of Georgia's story coming later in 2017.

Check the Temperature in Hades..

Yes, this is not bizarro world, despite evidence to the contrary.  I am actually taking a moment to give you lovely fantastic Four fans a quick update.

(Possibly also avoiding laundry, but that is neither here nor there)

I've been quiet because I've been hard at work maintaining my secret identity as an Internal Auditor, as well as polishing a very large manuscript in an entirely different genre.  I decided to take a walk on the wild side and try out a heady mix of two of my favorite things - archaeology and science.  I'll be giving you guys another update on that towards the end of February, I promise!

I hope you guys have gotten a chance to pick up Ten, the third installment of Rules Undying, and I promise that I will settle down and get to work on the final (probably!) book in the series.  I'll be posting a snippet of Zero as soon as it's relatively palatable and fit for human consumption.

So I guess it's time to run back into my cave, but trust me, it's only because the WiFi is great in there.

Mada ikite iru!

It is time!

I am happy to announce that the third installment of Rules Undying, Ten, is available now on Amazon.  This is the penultimate in the series, so start making your "four books in a trilogy" jokes now...

Ten is one of the most emotional and difficult books I've ever written, but I'm truly proud to share it with you.  I would love to know what you think, so please leave me a review on Amazon or GoodReads if you get a chance.

Oh, yes, I am starting on Zero as NaNoWriMo kicks into gear, so don't hate me too much for any cliffhangers...

Lastly, I would like to give a very special shout out to #VampireBooks4Blood.  The fantastic Four fans helped me contribute over $1300 to the American Red Cross.  I can't thank you enough.  You are all awesome!

Mada ikite iru and peace out!

October Updates

Just wanted to check in to let everyone know that yes, it is October 25th, but, no, there is no Ten out today.  I should have a final proof back from Amazon by Halloween and then I can give a final release date.  Unfortunately the problem with being an independent author is that if you get under the weather, there isn’t anyone to help you with deadlines.

I am super excited to share the third installment of the Rules Undying series with you as soon as it’s ready to go out.  In the meantime, here is the blurb from the back:

Caring for a vampire is a dirty job, but Georgia Sutherland is just the woman to do it. As the go-to gal for her recovering master, she has everything a girl can dream of—except for the man that she loves, Ren. Still, Georgia refuses to give up hope. For a chance at bliss, she's willing to risk rekindling her relationship with a rival vampire family.
Meanwhile, hallway across the country, Paige DeMarco has given up her old name and her old life, and finally found a man worth her time.  Unfortunately for her, werewolf relationships aren’t as simple as she hoped, especially when her vampire ex rolls into town.
Both women have to face the facts: once you get involved with vampires, life becomes complicated. As their lives intertwine, ghosts of the past rise up to haunt them. The only question is, can there ever be a happily ever after for those entangled with the undying?

I hope it piques your interest!  Also I wanted to say a big thank you to all my Fantastic Four fans out there.  As of yesterday we’ve earned over $900 for the American Red Cross.  Please make sure to check our Vampire Books for Blood to check out other amazing authors, and support a good cause.

Exciting news for October!

This month, it's time for your friendly neighborhood vampire writers to give back.  Starting today, $1 of every copy of Four and Six goes to the American Red Cross.  If you've been following the news at all, you have probably realized that this year has sucked in terms of disasters, and it's not just vampires who are in need of blood.

Even if you're already a fantastic Four fan and have my novels, please check out the other participating authors.  We're all just trying to lend a fang!

Vampire Books for Blood Facebook page can be found here.

Oh, and if that wasn't enough to sweeten the pot, both Four and Six have the Kindle version on sale for only $2!  You know, the perfect Halloween gift for the socially conscious vampire fan...

If you want to hear more, including information on a big announcement for Halloween, make sure to sign up for my newsletter here.  Don't worry about being spammed by my newsletter updates, I'm sure you've all realized by now how awkward and infrequent my blog updates can be...

Books for Blood and other Announcements

So it’s another week another blog post… who am I kidding, my posting schedule follows a mystical logic dictated by the movement of the stars, planets, and whatever pile of accounting ties up my brain all day.  I did want to give everyone the heads up about an amazing event happening in October.  I will be joining a group of talented authors to participate in Vampire Books for Blood.

For the entire month of October I will be donating $1 for every sale of both Four and Six to the American Red Cross.  Furthermore there are some great authors to discover who are also giving a little bit to help those in need, so please check it out.

I will also be visiting the always hilarious Bookies site for their annual Authtoberfest, and if you like and share my Facebook post (I need to share it on R.E.Carr then you can link), you have a chance to win a $10 Amazon gift card.  Last time I gave away a Four Playset so who know what sort of crazy shenanigans I’ll be up to this year…

Last, but not least, I have finally started up a newsletter and have a mailing list you can join. Don’t be alarmed, I promise to not spam you guys unless you want my recipe for an amazing musubi.  (My Hawaiian fans are totally getting this joke while you guys Google it…)  It’s just a list so that you can hear about new releases, sales and appearances from time to time, and I have a feeling you’ll want to join before October… wink, wink… know what I mean?

It Lives…

Just when you thought it was safe to talk about blenders, R. E. Carr has returned from the dead to write a blog post.  Well I wasn’t actually dead, I just threw myself wholeheartedly into finishing a rough draft of a little manuscript in the Rules Undying series.  I hope to have more news on Ten in upcoming weeks as well as on some exciting charity projects I’m working on for the fall so stay tuned.
I also have joined up with the awesome team at Ill Popcorn to participate in a weekly podcast that covers video games, pop culture and lots of superhero, sci-fi, and fantasy topics.  We even occasionally sing our tribute to Sharknado: the Musical.

I’d love to hear what you, my fantastic Four fans, have been up to while I’ve been holed up in my writer’s chair and generally looking scary and speaking nonsensically.  Please give me a shout out on Twitter @TotalRECarr or post to my Facebook page.

In the meantime here is a picture of baby platypuses in fedoras… because lord knows we all need a little more of that in our lives:

So I Did a Thing…

I just wanted to give my fantastic Four fans a quick update on my writing, as well as some insight into just how my process works.  We writers come in all breeds.  Many are meticulous architects of grand designs.  I love reading about their method and how they do detailed outlines of their work.  Oh, and I love hearing about research.  There is something truly beautiful about the process of creation when it is careful and controlled and full of technique.

I, on the other hand, and like a cat being taunted by a laser pointer.  I just see the shiny and run around and around chasing it, often at frenetic speed.  Naturally this leaves me collapsed in a heap ad sleeping for a good long time.  I also usually want tuna…

So when one of my super-talented writer friends, Meredith Pritchard, told me that Tor.com was taking submissions for Sci-Fi novellas only for the month of June, I jumped at the opportunity to chase that shiny.  Mind you, it didn’t occur to me that not actually having a novella in one of the four genres that Tor was looking for – Near Future, Space Opera, Cyberpunk, or Time Travel – was a barrier to entry.  Instead I just started writing.

Then I gave up and worked on some more Rules Undying, because, hey, that story isn’t done…

Then I just goofed around one night and started writing my nonexistent novella again.  Three days and 15,000 words later, HOLY CRAP, I had a novella.  I also have probably lost most of my capacity for rational thought; as evidenced by my searches for Kardashian-licensed products on the internet.

Now, I have absolutely no idea what is going to happen next.  I haven’t thrown my hat into the traditionally published ring for almost a decade, so my nerves are shot and my confidence is low, but I know that I have to try, even if it is just to hear the words “no”.  I’m climbing back up on my writing horse and I don’t think I can ever go back.

Oh, and I also took up co-hosting a podcast… because I didn’t have enough to do!

Monsters Have Been Known to Eat My Brain….

In today’s installment of me apologizing for not updating my blog regularly, I would happily like to report that the delays are 85% due to me working on a little manuscript known as Ten and only 15% due to random crap on the internet taking my free time and flushing it down the virtual toilet.

I suppose it would be best to give you a small insight as to exactly what happens when I start writing a book.  It starts with a great deal of whining, followed closely by scribbling notes on everything available, and then I start wandering around my kitchen late at night muttering obscure ramblings under my breath.  Thankfully, my family is now used to this and I haven’t been committed.

Once I have a solid body of incoherent notes that only make sense to me, I will sit and stare at a blank screen for at least a solid two to three days (hah, OK, it’s usually weeks).  It’s at this point you will find me doing things like posting on social media and blogging my wee heart out.  I’ll even be super productive at my day job until one terrifying moment where the monsters come out.  Those monsters simply love to eat my brain.

It starts with a trickle.  I’ll write a page or two, pat myself on the back and move on.  Then those couple pages will turn into an hour of missing time… then it becomes three of four hours a night.  Finally, I end up shuffling around my home and office like a zombie, using copious amounts of caffeine and meditation techniques to bring myself back to the present.  Sometimes it’s like a movie is on repeat in my head and I have to walk three miles at lunch just to let it play out while dodging suicidal caterpillars and other hapless individuals simply trying to walk at lunch.

I’m now at that point where I start forgetting things like where my keys are.  I move from task to task, using all the energy I can just to do a herculean task such as remember my name or where I parked.  Sentences remained unfinished, posts remain unread, and basically I appear to be a hollow shell of my normal self by day.

By night however, the voices in my head come out to play.  The words rush out of me like kids on the last day of school, and eventually a manuscript is done. I hope that the upcoming flood is worth it, and I’ll try to keep you updated when I’m more coherent.

Numerical Nonsense and Quiet Time…

It’s funny the sort of things that can derail a regular blog post – work, school, hours of Netflix binges… but I am happy to report that my silence as of late is because I have been plugging away at a little manuscript called Ten.

I start books all the time, yet I finish them rarely.  This has given me a complex of sorts, namely that a book is not real in my mind until I hit a set milestone.  I have a terrible graveyard of unfinished works and what they all have in common is the simple fact that I never finished writing chapter five in them.  On the flip side, if I actually finish writing chapter five, I end up finishing the manuscript.

Needless to say, I just managed to get through chapter five and about 30,000 words so all of a sudden the monster that is my creative brain has gone into overdrive.  On one hand, I apologize for not posting in here, but on the other, I’m really excited that I could get past my mental hurdle and really dive into the third book of the Rules Undying series.

However, that is not the only thing I worked on.  As you may have read on a certain day in April, I threatened the world with a special side project… Churning Desires!  I am genuinely overwhelmed by the response I received, including the fan fiction written about a book that actually hasn’t been written.

In honor of that love, and because reading the line “It’s the tiki tiki tiki tiki tiki room, mother******” filled me with such joy here is a short, short except from the book that never was:

“I never wanted to be a killer.  I never chose that life, but when you see a group of no-good hipsters turning your beloved homeland into a coffee-shop-filled, beat-poetry-rapping wasteland rife with slouchy hats and pointlessly thick black spectacles, what are you supposed to do?” Jedidiah sighed as he set his glass back on the bar. “It wasn’t murder.  It was justice.  How can any goodly folk charge six dollars for bad coffee?”

“Oh, Jedidiah!” Destiny cooed as she delicately clutched his hand in hers.  Her sparkling lavender nail polish reflected the concern in her big, brown eyes. “I never knew you experienced such tragedy.”

“That was only the tip of the iceberg, darlin’,” he said as the words caught in his throat. “I never told you what happened to your pet goat Biscuit…”

To be continued… maybe!  Feel free to add to it.  I’ll take whatever horrors you come up with if you tweet me @TotalRECarr.  #churningdesires

Avatars that Aren’t Overgrown Smurfs

I’ve had a week of blasts from the past.  First, they announce that there will four, count them, four Avatar sequels in the future . Then I start reading an interesting book, Status: the Game, by fellow Kindle Scout selected author, Vincent Robert Annunziato .  What do these have in common?  It’s not hackneyed environmental preaching and big blue people.  Instead both of these books involve a virtual self and a “real-world” self.

Anyone that knows me has probably heard me ranting…err discussing this topic.  I watch the Matrix on repeat.  I obsess over Sword Art Online and any anime that remotely deals with virtual selves.  I play MMORPGS and basically accept that one day I may become her Royal Highness Queen of the Geeks.

I even once wrote a serial of shorts touching on those very topics.   I then stitched the shorts into a novel(ish). You know, people sucked into a virtual world and exactly the sorts of shenanigans that follow.  As a special treat, I’ll even share the original, uncut, unedited first episode with you all, and who knows, if you like, I might release the whole thing again….

Summoning My Inner Gollum

“I wants the readers to leave me reviews!”

“No, I don’t want to know…”

“But if we reads them, we will get better…”

“No, if we reads them we will know they hates it!!!”

Just giving you gentle readers a deep insight into the mind of a writer, and yes, before you ask, I really do make the little hissy Andy Serkis voice, sometimes loud enough for the coworkers to hear.  If you’ve spent any time around an indie writer you have probably heard them begging for reviews.  As soon as they get then though, it’s like the sky is falling because, unfortunately, the writer has discovered that not everyone in this world thinks that their masterpiece is more awesome than a rainbow unicorn tyrannosaurus rex playing a steel guitar (I’m sure a trip to Google will find an appropriate image of this).

What causes such insanity?  Why do we beg for pain?  Are all authors masochists?

The short answer is probably not the most romantic.  I’ve come to terms with the fact that I want reviews because it is a double whammy of more money and more potential approval.  If I get more reviews, the all-mighty Amazon promotes me more, and that usually means I make more money.  Ooh, accounting-Gollum Rachel is pleased by this!

On the flip side, every good review makes my ego grow three sizes that day!  I fell loved and wanted and higher than a kite.  We won’t talk about the bad ones, the bad ones kinda sting, but I console myself that even a bad review gets me closer to whatever magic numbers make my book seen by more people.

So there you have it, the nasty little monster in my head (and quite possibly other author’s heads) that makes them beg for reviews. Is it a ground breaking revelation, probably not, but I bet you’ve totally searched for a heavy-metal, rainbow-painted dinosaur with a horn now, and there are far worse things to occupy a Friday afternoon.

P.S. I am working on some new fiction writing and not just talking to myself.

And now for something completely different...

Dearest friends and fans, I am overjoyed to share with you some exciting news.  Today I am thrilled to announce that I have finally discovered my true voice.  While I know that some of you have enjoyed my trifling tales of vampires and werewolves, I can deny the truth no longer…

Jedidiah Smuckers lives his life by the code, but that code is put to the test when a demon from his past returns to Lancaster County.  Her name is Destiny Lovegood, the legendary siren of the silver screen turned psychic investigator after a freak accident with a boom mic left her with power to talk with the dead. When she saunters up to his buggy, he knows that there is no running anymore.

Together they must uncover the deepest, darkest secrets of the local barn raising slumlord, all while fighting the passion that rises every time Destiny’s bonnet slips sideways.  Jedidiah may not wear buttons but somehow she always finds a way to press his…

His enemies tried to butter him up, but the margarine for error was too high and all the while he must fight his…
